It is known that Google’s Web Crawlers or Spiders are continuously traversing the Internet while looking for new information on countless of Web pages. Approximately once a month, Google updates their index by recalculating the page rankings of each of the Websites they have visited. SEO specialists usually refer to this time period as the “Google Dance”.
To make sure that they are accurate, these calculations must be performed several times. At the same time, since Google’s index is gargantuan, it may take several days (or even months!) for the calculations to be completed. Throughout this period, the rankings will vary greatly and sometimes in a wild manner. In a matter of seconds, a website can go from a ranking of two to a ranking of seven. Therefore, the term “Google Dance” was born to represent these fluctuations and it usually occurs at the end of each month.
If you are interested in seeing the Google Dance happen, it is actually fairly simple. In addition to their main server (www.google.com), Google has two other searchable servers (www2.google.com and www3.google.com). Usually, if you look up a specific search on the three servers, the results will be the same. Nonetheless, when the Google Dance occurs, the search engine rankings will be different on each. When the Dance is over, then the new ranking results will be seen on all three servers again.
When the dance is happening, if you visit either of the two additional servers mentioned before, you will be able to witness the new rankings that will sooner or later appear on Google’s main server once the recalculation period is over. However, it not recommended for anyone to focus too intensely upon the Google Dance since it can be very exasperating, especially if the site being monitored loses rankings or accidentally gets dropped from the index completely (yes, it has happened!).
